THE PROBLEM
The motivation behind this research is to compare a peer group of districts with a common population of 840-1200 high school students. 9th grade English/Language Arts End-of Course Exam Scores were compared to trends in attendance and discipline.
GAP ANALYSIS
Researchers observed ninth grade students from the study
group demonstrated decreases in academic achievement when correlated to increases in negative student behavior and/or low attendance rates.
OPPORTUNITY FOR FURTHER RESEARCH
This study could be used to determine factors for lowering discipline, increasing attendance rate, and improving student achievement on the English/Language Arts (ELA) End-of-Course Exam. We select ELA as the content area of study because 85% of all content is delivered through reading, writing, speaking and listening.
District, Discipline, Attendance and Academic Baseline Data for the Study Group Revealed
According to data retreived from the DESE MCDS Portal across the 2010-2014 school years, Van Horn and Lafayette high schools achieved the lowest English/Language Arts End-of-Course exam scores. Furthermore, the two schools also recorded the highest number of discipline incidents and attendance problems suggesting a direct correlation exists between academic success on high a high stakes test, discipline, and attendance.
Conversely, Kearney and Smithville High Schools logged the lowest number of discipline referrals, and found themselves near the top in the areas of attendance. Kearney also ranked highest on English/Language Arts End-of-Course exam scores.
Higher incidents of discipline and lower attendance percentages generally correlated to lower English/Language Arts End-of-Course exam scores.
